Lamp with Hummingbird
Another amazing project is behind us, this time it is a lamp with a hummingbird. However, behind this beauty lies a lot of work. It was challenging not only to make the lamp but also to design the structure so that the entire carving connection holds firmly.
The lamp is made from several types of wood, which creates an interesting color combination and gives it liveliness. Working with different woods is demanding because each has a different hardness. Therefore, I always have to adjust my techniques to achieve the desired result.
The hummingbird carving is made of birch and took the most time due to the fine details (for example, the eye is about the size of a matchstick tip). This process reminded me of working on the owl lamp, which had similar details of feathers and claws, only on a larger scale.
To make the orchid flowers stand out beautifully, I made them from spalted beech. The stems are made from regular beech due to its flexibility.
For the stand, I chose my favorite curly maple, which is commonly used in violin making for its acoustic properties. To highlight the curls, I lightly stained it with brown stain and then smoothed it. I stained the edge with dark brown stain, brushed it, and thus achieved the desired effect.
Structurally, the carving is solved with a metal wire that is embedded in the bird's beak and seamlessly continues into the orchid flower. To ensure a firm connection, I used epoxy glue.
